I am a maker who works in ceramics I hand build sculptural pieces, of abstracted bodily forms. They are primarily women in mid to latter life. Most pieces are formed from porcelain, I model with my hands with the minimum of tools, My pieces generally fit in the hand or can be placed to be viewed at close quarters. I subject the bisque fired, bone white work with its textured surface to the flames of a raku, pit or a sawdust firing. I enjoy the alchemy of these processes as well as the pallet of russets, greys, sepias, ochres and dun. These ancient process of colouring the surfaces, speak to me both of time passing and of timelessness, connecting my work to those long passed as well as to the elements. Looking at my work or better still with it nestled in the hands, I hope there is a feeling of continuity, of universality of experience between those before and after us which I hope will offer comfort and a sense of peace.
My work gives voice to how I feel about the changes that occur to our bodies over time. Not only to what they look like, but how they feel as we inhabit them. My pieces reflect a life time of gravitation pull, our actions and experiences, our bodily and emotional scars. They speak of the way, that in looking into a mirror we fail to recognise ourselves.
I seek to illustrate the commonality, the inevitability and the triumph of living; our common morphology, ancestry and anatomy.
